Attendance
California State Law requires that children of school age be present each day in school except for illness, medical appointments or a death in the family. To profit from all school experiences, students must regularly and punctually attend all classes. No amount of take-home work can replace the teaching done in the classroom. Excessive absences may result in retention in the same grade the following year, and may result in removal from Legacy Private Academy.
Legacy is required by the State of California to keep current attendance records on each child. Whenever a student is absent, a note of explanation needs to be brought to the office the day the student returns to school. This note must be written and signed by a parent or legal guardian and should include the date of the absence, as well as the specific reason for it. If students are recovering from a communicable disease, such as measles or chicken pox, a school entrance permit must be secured from the family doctor to comply with California Health Department regulations. The absence is unexcused until the office receives a note from the parent.
Absences will be excused for illness, a death in the family or for medical appointments. Parents who wish to take their children out of school for a family activity or special trip need to make arrangements with the school in advance and must complete the proper form in the school office. These absences are considered unexcused. Prior notice will allow teachers an opportunity to send home assignments and help reduce the academic impact of missing school. All absences other than those mentioned earlier will be considered unexcused and any work missed cannot be made up, resulting in zeroes for those assignments.
Students who leave school during the day must sign out with their parents at the school office before leaving. Parents should come to the office at the time of departure and the student will be called from class. Parents are asked not to go to the classroom to pick up their child. Students will not be released to anyone who is not .listed on the child's " Authorization Card" that is on file at the school.
In the event of an absence, the following procedures must be followed before students be allowed to return to school:
- The student must come to school with a written or typed letter, signed and dated by a parent/guardian or doctor, explaining the reason for and the day(s) of absence. This letter must also include the student's first and last name, grade level, and teacher's name. (Parents can also complete these forms at the front office.)
- The letter/note must be given to a member of the office staff who will determine the classification of the absence and in turn, give the student a copy of a completed Student Admittance Slip. This slip will detail the circumstances of the absence and indicated if the absence is excused or unexcused. One copy of the Student Admittance Slip will be kept on file in the office, another will go on file with the teacher and the third will be sent home to the parent/guardian.
- Students will not be allowed to return to the classroom without a Student Admittance Slip.
- Our office staff will record the absence on Legacy's Grade Reporting System
- Upon receipt of the Student Admittance Slip, the teacher will record the absence in his or her roll book.
