Student Activities
Student Council
Student Council is comprised of elected offiers and classroom representatives from fourth, fifth, and sixth grades. Elections are held in the fall of each year. Student Council is responsible for planning and coordinating many student activities, including School Spirit Days, fundraising events, and the Lion's Den (a bi-weekly closed-caption video newscast). Meetings are held twice per month. Eligibility for Student Council is based on academic status, behavior at schook demonstrated leadership skills, and teacher recommendation.
R.E.A.D. Program
The R.E.A.D. (Read, Enjoy, and Discover) Program is open to students in grades 1-6. To participate, students document minutes they read outside of school on special R.E.A.D. recording sheets. Students who read 300 or more minutes in a month receive certificates, prizes, and school-wide recognition. Any class with 100% student participation in the R.E.A.D. Program earns a special pizza and ice cream party. Top classroom R.E.A.D. participants are recognized at the year-end Award Ceremony.
Accelerated Reader
All Legacy students can participate in this exciting program designed to promote reading comprehension. Students check books out of the Legacy library according to reading level. After reading each book, the student takes a comprehension quiz on a classroom computer. After passing a designated number of quizzes, the child moves up to the next reading level and receives special recognition for this accomplishment.
Science Fair
The Legacy Science Fair takes place each spring. Students in 2nd - 6th grade may participate. Each participant chooses a science-related question to answer by conducting an appropriate experiment and/or completing research on the topic. Related information and conclusions are recorded in a science project notebook and displayed at the Science Fair on a visual display board. Students prepare and present a short explanation of their project, highlighting their findings and what they learned from the project. All participants are judged against pre-set criteria and recive a first place, second place, or participation medallion. Three projects are select by the judges as "Best of Show".
Speech Contest
Legacy Christian Academy holds it's Speech Contest in the fall of each year. Students in 3rd-6th grades are eligible to participate. The contest has preliminary and final rounds. Students are judged on poise, speech content, delivery, presentation, and overall effectiveness. A lunchtime speech-writing workshop is held for interested students approximately six weeks prior to the event. The Speech Contest is sponsored and judged by the Santa Clarita Valley's Optimist's Club.
Geography Bee and Club
Each fall, students in 4th-6th grades are invited to enter the Legacy Geography Bee. This contents is modeled after the National Geographic Bee and covers U.S. and world geography, including locations, landforms, landmarks, and cultural geography. First, second, and third place winners are awarded special ribbons and have their names engraved on the Geography Bee Trophy kept in the Legacy Trophy Case. The Geography Club meets once per week during the eight weeks preceeding the Geography Bee. Students take a "journey" around the world during this lunchtime club, visiting one continent per week. They receive a passport when they enter the club, which is subsequently stamped after visiting each locale. Students learn about the culture, people, and land on each continent through entertaining presentations, videos, and hands-on experience.
